9 Things I No Longer Do as an FDN-P

As an FDN-P, I’m always looking at the root causes of why people feel tired, bloated, or off balance. Over the years, I started realizing that some of the most normal, everyday things were actually working against my energy, hormones, and gut health.

I don’t share this to make you feel like you have to throw everything away overnight — small changes over time are what really add up. But here are 9 things I personally stopped using (and encourage my clients to rethink):

1. Coloring My Hair

Conventional dyes contain harsh chemicals that can be absorbed through the scalp. Over time, they can burden the liver, which already works hard to detox our hormones and environmental toxins.

2. Using Mouthwash

Most mouthwashes wipe out the good bacteria along with the bad. That balance of bacteria is critical for gut health, digestion, and even hormone metabolism.

3. Burning Candles Daily

Fragranced candles may smell cozy, but many release endocrine-disrupting chemicals that affect hormones and air quality.

4. Conventional Sunscreen

Many store-bought sunscreens contain ingredients that mimic estrogen in the body. Mineral-based sunscreens (like zinc oxide) are a safer swap.

5. Random Probiotics or Supplements

More isn’t always better. Taking supplements without testing can throw off your gut balance or waste money without fixing the root issue.

6. Wearing Perfume

Synthetic fragrance is one of the biggest hidden sources of hormone disruption. Natural alternatives (like essential oils) give you a safer option.

7. Using Plastic Containers

Plastics leach chemicals like BPA and phthalates, especially when heated. These disrupt hormones and can impact fertility, metabolism, and weight.

8. Drinking Unfiltered Water

Tap water often contains chlorine, fluoride, and other chemicals. A quality water filter can protect your gut and overall health.

9. Buying Non-Organic

Pesticides from conventional produce can stress the liver and impact gut bacteria. Choosing organic (even just for the “dirty dozen”) helps reduce toxic load.

The Bottom Line

These things really aren’t doing any of us favors, but change doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Start with one swap at a time — maybe switching to glass food storage this week or grabbing a water filter next month. Over time, these small steps make a big difference in energy, weight, and hormones.
